Dove Advanced Care Color Repair Therapy - Review

On March 18, 2010, I posted a review about Pureology Hydrate Shampoo/Conditioner which you can read here . At the time I had been using the Shampoo and Conditioner for about 3 weeks and was extremely pleased with the results. Unfortunately I had to stop using the Pureology line because my scalp became extremely itchy.

When my scalp first got itchy I thought something had changed with the water at our house, but my husband wasn’t having any issues. I asked my husband to pick up a new shampoo/conditioner on his way home. While this could have ended in a disaster (I had visions of shampoo/conditioner for oily hair), I was surprised by his pick. He brought home Dove Advanced Care Color Repair Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner for Colored or Highlighted Hair.

While this shampoo and conditioner aren’t as “natural” as the Pureology line, my hair is still as soft and shiny as when I was using the Pureology. The only noticeable difference with the Dove line, is that my scalp does not itch. If you are concerned about the price of the Pureology or you feel like it isn’t worth the money, I would definitely recommend giving this line of Dove products a try.

TERK HDTVa Amplified Directional Indoor HDTV Antenna Review

Let me start this review with a little bit of background information. My husband and I used to have DirecTV and we were loyal DirecTV subscribers for the last four years. Where we live, the cable company doesn’t offer nearly as many HD channels as DirecTV offers, so that was what persuaded us to switch from cable to DirecTV. One thing I never liked about DirecTV was that you get roped in with a GREAT price and then after the first year it more than doubles. I knew this going in, but still…it stings when your bill goes from roughly $35 to well over $100 (even with the AAA discount). Anyway, since this isn’t a review on DirecTV (although I may have to get around to writing one since I am extremely disappointed with their service) I’ll be moving on to the main event, my review on the TERK HDTVa Amplified Directional Indoor HDTV Antenna.

For the past 4 years we have been paying for an extra DirecTV (non HD) receiver in our spare bedroom. Honestly, we only have guests over about 2 or 3 times a year, so we thought it was useless for us to be paying for the extra receiver and it never being used and we cancelled the extra box and purchased the TERK HDTVa Amplified Directional Indoor HDTV Antenna. My husband set everything up, and I promise you the picture and sound quality was superior to that of DirecTV. Since this is a guest room, we basically set it up and forgot about it for the last few months. This past weekend we had some family come to visit who stayed in our guest room. After their first night, they commented on the superior picture quality and couldn’t believe it came from an antenna! They actually had my husband show them the website so they could purchase one on the spot! I was impressed!

After they left, my husband and I got to talking about cancelling DirecTV and only using an antenna in the master bedroom and the living room. I know this may sound cheap, but we honestly do not watch much TV besides the news. Once we cancelled our DirecTV, we went to a local electronic store to purchase another antenna (we wanted an antenna in the bedroom right away, didn’t want to wait for shipping) and were unhappy to see that the Terk was not available. After a salesman told us that the RCA - Amplified Indoor Off-Air HDTV Antenna would suit our needs. Unfortunately this antenna does not pull in the amount of channels that the Terk does and the Terk is cheaper. Thankfully we only purchased one! My husband ordered another Terk online, the Terk from the guest bedroom has now been put into the master bedroom and the RCA is in the guest bedroom! Sorry guests!!  Picture of our RCA model below:

iPhone Travel Apps

1.  TripIt – Basic Version is Free - www.tripit.com

I have found Trip It to be the easiest way to have easy access to all my travel details (flights, hotel, car reservations, cruise, activities, tours, etc.) all on one site. You can add your trip information two ways. The easiest is to forward your confirmations to plans@tripit.com and the site will pull the necessary information and build your itinerary for you. I prefer doing it this way for business trips.

The second option to build your itinerary is to go to their website (www.tripit.com) and enter all your trip information yourself. While this is more time consuming, I actually prefer this method for leisure trips. For me, there is something about planning everything out that allows you to see if you have over planned or if you have room to do more.

All the information will then be available at your fingertips when you launch the app on your iPhone! The free version provides you with the following on the website: flight tracking information, terminal maps, driving directions, and airplane-seat advice from Seat Guru. The Pro service adds loyalty-program tracking and recommends other flights if yours is canceled and that will cost you about $69 per year.

This was our first time to stay at this beautiful hotel on Seneca Lake. We visited during their off-season and had a wonderful room overlooking the lake. Everything is fresh, clean tastefully decorated. Staff members were extremely friendly and helpful.

Options for Natural Allergy Relief

Many people are plagued by allergies and over the counter medications may not completely help, plus you often get unwanted side effects. Relief doesn't have to come in the form of a prescription or over the counter drug remedy; there are natural ways to help your body deal with the effects of seasonal allergies.

Here are remedies that I have found beneficial:

1. The Neti Pot

The Neti pot naturally cleanses and refreshes the nasal passages to help relieve allergy symptoms. Salt water has been a natural remedy for years for soothing sore throats in addition to keeping the nasal passageways moist. Flushing the nasal passageways with a saline rinse using a neti pot can also rinse away the allergens that get trapped within the nasal cavity. The salt water breaks up sinus congestion too and can greatly reduce your dependency on antihistamine medications. I usually the Neti Pot cleanse once a day, but it can be used twice.

2. Quercetin

Quercetin, a naturally occurring bioflavanoid, has properties that reduce the inflammation associated with allergies and control the release of histamine. Quercetin dosed 1,000 -2,000mg per day in 4-6 divided is optimal for reducing allergies. Derived from different plants, quercetin can prevent your body cells from releasing histamine, the chemical that triggers allergic reactions. Quercetin also is an antioxidant that combats free radicals in the body which could lead to cancer. The best time to take quercetin supplements is before allergy season so it can build up in your body and be of the best benefit. Vitamin C also helps to reduce histamine.

3. Pycnogenol

Pycnogenol (an extract of pine bark) stabilizes the cells of the body that are responsible for the symptoms of allergies. It causes mast cells to be less reactive to the foreign proteins that cause allergies. Pycnogenol inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells - histamine released from mast cells is responsible for the inflammation/redness that occurs during allergies.

4. Eating Better

A diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids can help reduce your susceptibility to allergens that can trigger reactions by reducing inflammation. Flaxseed oil, salmon, walnuts, and meats and eggs from grass-eating animals all contain healthy amounts of omega-3. Spicy and piquant foods can open your passageways and thin mucus. Chili peppers, horseradish and spicy mustard all work as short-term decongestants.

Chicken soup, fresh garlic, onions and hot tea all work to reduce allergic reactions as well. Chicken soup has some compounds which work to block the inflammatory response of the body which causes congestion and swelling of the nasal and bronchial passageways. Garlic has natural components that work to fight of bacteria and other infections.

Natural, raw honey has can build your resistance to many allergens over time, but you must start before allergy season begins. Bees get pollen from a variety of plants, some of them which produce known allergens. The honey has antimicrobial properties which help you fight off allergies and help you build a tolerance to the very plants you are allergic to.

In conclusion, fighting allergies through natural means has worked for thousands of years for other people so it should be able to work for us. You do have to plan ahead with some remedies but being able to handle allergies without chemical means is a much healthier proposition. Plus, natural remedies typically do not cause any of the unwanted side effects.

I found the best price for the vitamins (Quercetin and Pycnogenol) at Puritan's Pride.  They also have the Neti Pot and the solution used in it.  While I wouldn't say the Neti Pot was a substantial savings from other places, it was definitely still cheaper.  For me placing one order was more convenient for me.  www.puritans.com

California Pizza Kitchen - Review

My husband and I recently had lunch at the California Pizza Kitchen located in Plymouth Meeting.  We have eaten at many different locations of California Pizza Kitchen and never had a bad meal or bad service. 
We always order the Spinach Artichoke Dip as an appetizer, but decided to try their new Hawaiian BBQ Chicken: Fresh pineapple, BBQ chicken, smoked Gouda and Mozzarella cheeses, barbecue sauce, sliced red onions and cilantro. This was delicious!  I was a little nervous about BBQ sauce, but it really worked! 

As I said, we have visited many different locations and have always been more than satisfied.  If you haven't been to a California Pizza Kitchen and have the opportunity to visit one, please do so!  Your taste buds will thank you :-)

Hilton Garden Inn Philadelphia Center City Review

A friend of mine commented that I have only been posting reviews that are positive.  Since she is a good friend of mine, she has heard my many stories about terrible hotel stays, bad experiences with products and terrible restaurant visits.  Obviously you can't always go off one experience, but sometimes you have such a bad experience that you do not want to ever give your hard earned money to a company again. 

I seem to have pretty bad luck with hotels, especially those in larger cities (which was why I praised the San Francisco Marriott Union Square in my review which you can find here ).  In previous trips to Philadelphia, we always stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Philadelphia Downtown and always enjoyed it. For this particular weekend, that hotel was unfortunately booked. On our most recent trip to Philadelphia, my husband and I booked the Hilton Garden Inn Philadelphia Center City (1100 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

When we booked the room, we opted to do the Advance Purchase to get the best rate since we knew our travel plans would not change.  This basically means that you pay in full in advance.  No changes are allowed, no credits will be given, completely non refundable. With that said, when we checked in we didn't expect to have to give a credit card or anything.  We were wrong.  They require a credit card in case you damage the room or charge anything to the room.  Okay, that's understandable and I didn't have a problem with it.  But what if we didn't have a credit card with us?  What if we assumed since we pre-paid we didn't need a credit card?  I expressed my feelings to the woman who checked us in.  She basically looked at me like I was a piece of dirt and ignored me.  Fine.  I was annoyed.  We got our room keys and left to go to our room. 

I had requested (about a month in advance) a high floor room, preferably with a view of the city.  I was assured this would be noted on my reservation and that it shouldn't be a problem to accomidate since they weren't at capacity. I called about a week in advance and was assured this was noted on my reservation and there shouldn't be an issue with my request.  Weren't we surprised to enter our room to find we had a beautiful view...of a parking lot! The room itself was clean, so I wasn't about to argue about the view...I just accepted it.

Fast foward to about midnight.  We get back to the room from the concert, take showers and want to just go to sleep since we were exhausted after traveling and the concert.  Side note, keep in mind the ringing you have in your ears after a concert making all noises muffled for a while.  I think we fell asleep about 1:00 only to be woken up NUMEROUS times by the people in the room next to ours.  They were obviously having some type of party and being extremely loud.  I called the front desk and was assured someone would come up to tell them to be quiet.  My husband and I listened for the knock at their door (since you could hear basically everything through the walls) and was angered when 15 minutes passed with nothing.  I called the front desk again and was told that someone had in fact gone PAST the room but didn't hear any noise so there was no reason to disturb the guests.  I told them to make sure someone came up and if they couldn't hear the noise from the hallway then they could certainly come into our room and listen to them carrying on.  I was assured that wasn't necessary and someone would talk to the guests.  About 10 minutes passed and I heard the knock at their door (actually heard the knock).  The guests were told someone was complaining about their noise levels.  That was it.  The guy left withour really giving a warning.  Needless to say, they got louder.  I called again, and wasn't surprised when no one came to follow up on my noise complaint.  We turned the TV on to try to drown the sound out, but didn't get to sleep until about 4:00.  At about 6:00 the guests to our other side must have woken up because the sound of their bathroom door opening and closing woke us up.  By this point we just wanted to get out of there.  We got dressed and checked out.  We expressed our dissatisfaction with the hotel and we weren't even offered an apology.  We were too exhausted to argue for a refund, so we just left.

I would never in a million years give this hotel a second chance, nor would I recommend it to anyone.  I would actually recommend staying in your car over staying in this hotel.  The walls are paper thin and the staff doesn't care if their guests are satisfied.
